What is kerf?

Kerf is the width of material removed by the saw (or waterjet) as it cuts. In stone fabrication it is commonly about ¼". Nesting must leave kerf between pieces; ignoring it overstates how much countertop fits on a slab.

Effect on yield

Every cut corridor costs kerf. Dense nests with many small pieces lose more to kerf than a few large straights. Yield estimates that use gross slab SF without kerf will order short.
