How many slabs do I need for a countertop job?

Divide total countertop square footage by usable yield per slab, then add a planning factor. A jumbo quartz slab at roughly 130" × 65" is about 58 gross square feet, but real nesting yield after kerf, L-shaped pieces, and grain constraints often lands closer to 40–45 square feet per slab. Many shops add about 15% for breakage, veining mismatch, and attic stock. A 2,000 sq ft job commonly lands around 50–55 jumbo slabs.

Slab sizes

Standard quartz commonly runs roughly 119" × 56". Jumbo is often around 130" × 65". Super jumbo typically runs 136"–140" × 76"–82". Real slab dimensions vary by supplier and color — verify against the actual bundle.

Why gross square footage lies

A 58 sq ft slab does not yield 58 sq ft of countertop. Kerf (commonly about ¼"), the rectangular blank an L-shaped piece consumes, and edge trim all subtract.

The interlocking trick

Two identical L-shaped pieces rotated 180° nest into each other. The combined height is 2H − notch, not 2H. On a multi-unit job where one kitchen type repeats 30 times, this is often the single largest source of yield.

Planning factor

Many shops add about 15% over the raw nest to cover breakage, veining rejection, and attic stock. Shops that skip a planning factor often order short.

Seams

Seam count affects nesting. A monolithic L that won't pack gets seamed — and in most shops the seam goes behind the sink, never at a cooktop.
