How accurate is automated countertop takeoff?

Automated countertop takeoff can reconcile to within a fraction of a percent of a manually produced takeoff when the source drawings are dimensioned. Counterly has been validated against completed production takeoffs across multiple multi-unit residential projects, covering hundreds of apartments and dozens of distinct kitchen and vanity types, with most types reproducing to within 0.5% on both square footage and linear footage of finished edge.

Customer layouts vs fabrication drawings

Reading a customer's kitchen layout is a harder problem than reading a fabrication drawing. A fabrication drawing is already dimensioned by an estimator. A customer layout has to be interpreted.

On this scorecard: the 64-unit and mid-rise rows were validated against shop-issued quotes / fabrication-dimensioned answer keys. The townhouse row and the miss cases below were validated from customer kitchen layouts. The mixed-use row mixed kitchen layouts with vanity and backsplash groups already broken out in the shop's production takeoff. Blurring that difference would make the page less credible to anyone who knows the trade.

Per-type match vs aggregate total

A single aggregate benchmark only catches gross errors. If a job's answer key is one total square footage number with no per-type breakdown, say so — it is a weaker validation than a per-type match.

Per-type or per-group matches: 64-unit (3 of 3), mixed-use (12 of 12 groups), mid-rise (137 tops), townhouse (4 of 4). Aggregate project-total only: the 284-unit multifamily row — twelve unit types and ~15,000 sq ft reconciled to the shop's benchmark total, without a per-type breakdown in the answer key. That exact total is still useful; it is not the same claim as reproducing every type.

Published misses

Off by 24% on one kitchen type.The run along one wall was a seated peninsula at 38" deep; it had been treated as a standard 26" base run. One wrong depth on one run moved the type by a quarter. This is why depth is read per run, and why it's editable in the interface.

Over by 51% on another type in the same job.The layout showed a removable island the issued quote didn't include. The takeoff wasn't wrong about the drawing — the drawing and the quote disagreed. Now flagged for confirmation rather than silently resolved either way.

Inconsistent range treatment. On one type a slide-in range broke the run; on another the full back wall was quoted through it. Both appear in real production quotes. The convention has to be set per shop, not assumed.

First-pass nesting ran 20% conservative.An early slab count came in well above what the shop actually planned to buy, because identical L-shaped pieces weren't being interlocked. Nesting yield on repeating unit types is where the slab count is won or lost.
