What is finished edge?

Finished edge is the exposed perimeter of a countertop piece that receives an edge profile (eased, bullnose, ogee, and so on). It is not the same as run length. Walls, tall units, and adjacent stone hide edges; only the visible outline is finished-edge footage.

L-shaped pieces

For an L-shaped piece with legs a and b and depth d, merged into one piece, the outline perimeter is 2(a + b + d). Quoting finished edge as the sum of wall lengths overcounts hidden edges and undercounts exposed returns.

Why shops measure it separately

Edge profiling is priced per linear foot. Square footage drives slab and material cost; finished edge drives CNC time and edge labor. A takeoff that only reports SF underprices the edge work.
